From Dream to Reality: The Journey of Writing "Alfie and the Zhuang"
Share
There’s something magical about taking an idea that’s been sitting in your heart and turning it into something tangible that others can experience. That’s exactly what my journey has been like in writing my first book, Alfie and the Zhuang, and I’m thrilled to finally share that it’s now available for sale.
The Beginning: A Story for Alfie
It all started with a simple thought: I wanted my son, Alfie, to understand and embrace his rich cultural heritage. My wife, Lin, is Zhuang, and through her, I’ve been introduced to the incredible traditions, music, and stories of her people in Guangxi, China. I wanted Alfie to know these stories, not just in passing, but to feel deeply connected to them.
I’m not a professional writer, but as a father, I wanted to give Alfie something personal, a gift that he could cherish as he grows. That’s when the idea for Alfie and the Zhuang was born—a children’s book that takes him, and other young readers, on a journey through Zhuang culture, while also celebrating the beauty of family and heritage.
The Writing Process: A Learning Curve
Writing this book was both a joy and a challenge. I’ve always loved storytelling, but translating that love into something structured and purposeful required patience and a lot of learning. I researched the traditional stories and customs of the Zhuang people, and Lin was my constant guide, helping me ensure that every detail was authentic and respectful.
The story follows Alfie, the main character, as he asks his mum to tell him about her Zhuang heritage. Together, they explore the vibrant music, clothing, and food of the Zhuang people. Through this journey, Alfie learns more than just facts—he gains a deeper appreciation for who he is and where his family comes from.
There were late nights, moments of doubt, and countless rewrites, but every word felt like a step closer to creating something that would mean the world to Alfie and, hopefully, to other families as well.
Bringing the Story to Life
Once the manuscript was finished, it was time to bring the story to life with illustrations. Finding the right artist to capture the heart and soul of the Zhuang culture was key. The vibrant colors, traditional attire, and landscapes of Guangxi needed to leap off the page, and I’m thrilled with how the illustrations turned out.
Then came the process of formatting, proofreading, and preparing the book for print. It’s a long road from having a manuscript to holding a finished book in your hands, but every step felt like progress towards something that mattered.
The Final Step: Publication and Beyond
Now that Alfie and the Zhuang is published and available for purchase, I feel a mix of pride and excitement. This book isn’t just a story; it’s a bridge for families like ours—those who are navigating multiple cultures and trying to pass on the beauty of heritage to their children.
Alfie and the Zhuang is my love letter to my son and to the Zhuang culture that has become such an important part of our family. I hope it inspires parents and children alike to explore their roots, ask questions, and embrace the uniqueness of their backgrounds.
